According to the writer Coriolano de Medeiros, in his Chorographic Dictionary of Paraíba, Pitimbu means in Tupi indigenous language "Olho D`água do Fumo", because Pitimbu is located in a coastal region, the vegetation that was around the small river sources had a rotten appearance and had an odor that resembled the tannin that is the raw material of tobacco.
